Fiscal management is more than just passing a tax rate and approving the budget. It’s about understanding what the numbers mean, where they come from and how best to use them to make critical decisions. For the school board, that means making sure all funds are properly managed, from making sure the right programs are funded to ensuring that purchasing procedures are followed – and, in general, that all funds are properly managed. This special three-hour session combines the newly revised “Finance II: Dollars and Sense” and “Finance III: Dollars and Decisions” sessions with information on setting tax rates.

For board members of any length of service and especially convenient for members who need three hours of finance to meet their annual requirements.

Successful people take advantage of emerging opportunities; successful people also seek better solutions for their ongoing challenges. In both cases, creativity is the crucial ingredient. Creativity requires a broader and more imaginative way of thinking, but it’s open to all and it can help anyone in everyday life. Join artist and speaker Richard Hight as he shares ideas for strengthening leadership abilities and creating strategies for turning change into opportunity, while creating an original 6-by-6-foot painting on stage.

This session will also include presentation of the Warren H. Proudfoot Outstanding School Board Member and Friend of Education Awards.

Emerging federal regulations are driving utility costs upward at unprecedented rates. If schools and districts fail to continually focus on implementing best energy efficiency practices, their higher utility bills will ultimately siphon funds from the classroom and rob students of learning opportunities. Learn what to expect, what others are doing and options to successfully fend off this challenge.

The Kenton County school district has partnered in an innovative program that has saved the district over $3 million in two years. The district is on a path to operate transportation at commercial levels of performance by moving away from managing transportation on a percentage of the previous year’s budget to operating on a cost basis using commercial companies for comparison.

Confused about the differences between Kentucky’s Bid Law and the Model Procurement Code? The goal of drug testing students is to curtail or intervene in drug use, but there is a lack of individual and substance abuse counseling in schools, even after a student screens positive. Educating students and parents is vital, and participants in this session learn how urine drug screening keeps students accountable and reduces recidivism.

This session extends budgeting and resource allocation down to the school level. Participants learn how policy and discretionary decisions impact funding for instructional resources at the school level, including classroom sizes and instructional material. Participants see how the budget extends to the procurement and payment process and get a short overview of restricted funds and the scope of the annual audit.
