2018 School Energy Summit
It's time for the 2018 School Energy Summit! Build or enhance skills in energy-efficiency to help your schools save energy and save money. Network with colleagues from across the state, as well as meet vendor partners to help resolve energy related facility issues.

Breakout sessions are organized along three tracks:

* Intermediate
* Advanced – Finance

Register for the breakout session you plan to attend, as this helps ensure sessions are assigned to rooms of sufficient size to accommodate interest.

Identifying energy projects to reduce energy use is a must. The basic steps to assessing potential procedures/projects that will impact your school will be reviewed, along with review of a simple audit form.

Advancements in technology have brought about offerings from utility companies. Some of those being advanced metering, solar and changes in utility rebates. Learn about some of the options/changes that are coming and the reasoning behind them.

Unintended Air Infiltration into school buildings is widely overlooked and is a key cause of increased energy costs and poor classroom comfort. In this session we will show how the preliminary visual inspection as validated by pre and post blower door tests. In addition, we'll present the calculations that that connect air barrier solutions to the entire HVAC system. Finally, we will present the financial and environmental impact the air barrier solution.

This is a workshop (participant work required) for addressing many of the questions of energy managers:
* How do I get started?
* What’s my current state?
* What’s my opportunity?
* How do I quantify that opportunity?
* What makes sense to do? Financially?
* How do I sell that opportunity?
* What are my cumulative savings?
1:45PM - 4:30PMBreakout B-2: Lighting Audit Workshop
Intermediate - laptops or calculators encouraged
This is a workshop (participant work required). With lighting about 25 percent of electricity consumption in a school, assessing current lighting fixtures and defining potential lighting projects can mean significant energy and dollar savings. Participants in this workshop will complete a high-level lighting audit for our conference location, and receive a tool to assist with implementing lighting audit for their schools.

The University of Kentucky Facilities Management is a “service provider” with a mission to provide a physical environment for the entire organization to achieve excellence. This tour will review Delta Room Operations, Scheduling Optimization, Water/Waste Water Processing, and Communications & Funding Decisions.

The responsibility of energy management requires many tasks. One is engaging district leadership to gain their support and understanding of a complicated business process. Another is learning how to prepare and respond to board member requests. Dr Kevin Hub will present how to engage your district leadership and then moderate a panel of board members to gain their insight.

Introductory
How do you involve building occupants with real concerted efforts to conserve energy? LET THE STUDENTS LEAD THE EFFORT! Learn exactly how students in the Kenton County School District drive change and work with faculty and staff to affect their energy consumption and impact the financial bottom line.

Schools are the center of the community and therefore open in many cases 16 hours a day. How can you optimize use of the facility, yet ensure efficient use? Learn from a panel of facility-energy managers the procedures they have found to meet this goal.

A school’s indoor environment can have a significant impact on health and learning. Children are more vulnerable to the negative health and performance effects of poor environmental conditions, including indoor air quality (IAQ). Learn best practices for healthy, efficient and reliable school buildings, and how Estill Springs Elementary protects IAQ. This session will share tools and resources for implementing preventive maintenance practices and protecting IAQ during energy efficiency upgrades and retrofits.

TWO PART SESSION - KRS157.455 strongly encourages the use of a life-cycle cost, an approach to building design that considers construction, operation and maintenance during the initial decision-making process. This session is directed to school districts constructing new buildings or renovating existing buildings. Learn the steps to implementing Life Cycle Project Costing.

BREAKOUT SESSION D
10:30AM - 11:30AMBreakout D-1: Getting to ENERGY STAR
Introductory
Volume of ENERGY STAR certified schools continues to be a key metric for Kentucky, as the state nears the rank of 2nd in the nation in percentage of ENERGY STAR schools. Presenters will provide a hands-on demonstration of 4-steps to benchmark your schools in EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager using a real school building from Paris Independent Schools in this session. Panelists will also provide information on the benefits of benchmarking and ENERGY STAR certification.

With demands to keep equipment for as long as possible, learn from a panel of facility-energy managers some of the best practices in preventative maintenance and general maintenance for keeping all in tip-top condition.
