2014 KSBA Annual Conference - "Kentucky Public Schools - Creating Next Generation Leaders"
It's time for KSBA's 78th Annual Conference! Get ready to network with colleagues from across the state and participate in informative workshops and general sessions designed to enhance your school board service.
You won't want to miss what we have planned for this year's event!
All sessions are open to all board members, regardless of experience and qualify for Academy of Studies (A/S) general elective credit unless otherwise noted.
Registrants should pre-register for each workshop they plan to attend, as this helps ensure workshops are assigned to rooms of sufficient size to accommodate interest. Please note that conference workshops are available on a first come, first served basis and pre-registration is not a guarantee that a seat will be available.(Pre-conference sessions are guaranteed with advance registration).

Pre-conference Workshops, Friday, January 31 (3 hours training credit)
9:00AM - 12:00PM - Fee: $35.00 | A1 School Boards – Spending Time on Student Achievement or ??? (Breathitt, 2nd flr.) (A/S Level IV required topic “Exemplary Leadership Strategies”)
This workshop will look at how school boards and superintendents often work, dealing with day-to-day pitfalls instead of spending time on what’s important – student achievement. The workshop will cover common mistakes boards and superintendents make, and share some ideas based on the Lighthouse Project that can help school board teams spend their time and energy supporting teaching and learning.

9:00AM - 12:00PM - Fee: $35.00 | A2 Student Experts on How to Have a Successful Board Meeting (Collins, 2nd flr.) A child will lead them – or in this case, a group of FFA members from Green County Schools. The group, who competes annually in FFA parliamentary procedure contests, will teach school board members a thing or two about running meetings according to these rules, with help from their advisor. Learn what every school board team needs to know to ensure order and deliberative discussion, while getting business done efficiently and effectively. |

But do we really? Many policies and practices, though well meaning, create an injustice for some populations. This session will be interactive as participants read scenarios of injustices and reflect on their practices. |

Students in the 21st century need to know about the 4 Cs (critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication) as well as the 3 Rs! This session will cover why education needs to change, the skills students need to be globally competitive and the leadership roles of the school board in ensuring that all students are college- and career-ready and prepared for their future. |
9:00AM - 12:00PM - Fee: $35.00 | A5 Kentucky State Police Active Shooter Training Program (6th Annual Joe England School Safety Seminar) (Combs-Chandler, 2nd flr.) In an active shooter event, are you prepared to make the decisions that will save lives? This program gets participants out of their seats and challenges their ability to identify their response options. The training session provides simulated active-shooter scenarios to stimulate and challenges participants’ thought processes and reinforce their ability to survive an active shooter event. |

His powerful, soul-searching presentations uplift audiences to a higher standard, and to a level where they strive only for the best. Harvey Alston believes in solitary achievement, shared accomplishment and the dignity of human beings. As one of the most in-demand speakers in America, Harvey Alston's career has spanned positions from head football coach of Columbus East High School in Ohio in 1968, to assistant director of student financial aid at the university level. As an educator he’s taught English, biology, health, life sciences and math curricula.
The Dupree Superintendent of the Year and Friend of Education Award will also be presented. |

This class is designed to provide examples of potential ethical questions that school board members face, and to encourage thoughtful consideration of how some actions and decisions can be perceived by the taxpaying public.

3:15PM - 4:30PM | A7 Risk Management and Controlling Risks (Breathitt, 2nd flr.) (A/S Level III required topic “Liability Issues, Insurance & Risk Management”)
This session will enhance understanding of risk exposures, identifying risks that affect losses and consequently, premiums. Presenters will review scenarios for implementing proactive risk management, using school staff, insurance agency risk management and the district’s insurance carrier. The focus will be on establishing a zero-accident culture that protects students and staff.

3:15PM - 4:30PM | A8 Creating Next-Generation Leaders Through Student Ambassadors (Sampson, 1st flr.) This session details the role of student ambassadors, who hone next-generation leadership skills by serving as liaisons between the school district and community. Russellville High School Ambassadors will discuss how they promote mutually beneficial relationships between public education and the larger community in an effort to strengthen both. |

This session will look at all aspects of the school facilities planning and construction process and the efforts to achieve “equity and adequacy” in school buildings to create the spaces needed to develop the next generation of leaders in the Commonwealth.

(A/S Level I required course) This is the first of a two-part session that will examine the broad fiscal responsibilities of school boards related to “non-cognitive” issues (including procurement, facilities, transportation, financial reporting and audits).

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is the nation’s leading STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program. To compete globally, the future U.S. workforce will require stronger skills in the STEM disciplines. This session will feature a panel discussion on how PLTW creates next- generation leaders. |

This session will highlight the paradigm shift underway in Taylor County Schools, enabling the move to a 24/7, 365-day per year, standards-based experience. Technology is used to personalize coursework and advance students based on mental capacity rather than chronological age. The initiative has resulted in zero dropouts for four consecutive years. |

Students who fear face-to-face reporting of bullying or other safety issues may be less reluctant to share this vital information when they have an online option. This interactive session will present a step-by-step explanation of the STOP! Tipline, the Kentucky Center for School Safety’s new online prevention/reporting tool.

Kenton County Schools’ Academies of Innovation and Technology provide a pipeline to supply employees for high-demand occupations, while Grant County’s new Career and Technology Center provides hybrid pathways for college and career for both its students and the community. |
1:30PM - 2:45PM | C8 Where Teaching Quality Meets Common Core (Sampson, 1st flr.) The Literacy Design Collaborative and Mathematics Design Collaborative are initiatives for implementing the Common Core State Standards. The Professional Growth and Effectiveness System (PGES) is Kentucky’s new principal and teacher evaluation system, being piloted statewide this year. A panel of teachers will share how the three approaches work and how they can work together. |

Like many school districts, Berea Independent was faced with losing the school nurse services provided through the local health department. The district has been able to establish a partnership with White House Clinics to expand services to students and families, including mental health and dental services. |
1:30PM - 2:45PM | C10 Stakeholders Collaborate to Help Students Achieve College and Career Readiness (Brown, 2nd flr.) This session will explain key strategies of the Kentucky STEMx Network for improving STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. Learn about a draft performance guide to help educators, administrators and other community stakeholders systematically increase their impact on STEM education. Participants will be able to provide input on the guide. |

Board members now play a key role in the development, support and monitoring of the Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) that is part of the first and second year training and certification required of all first and second year superintendents. 3:00PM - 4:15PM | D8 Teaching Kids to Think: Collaborating on a “Deeper Learning” K-8 STEM Curriculum (Laffoon, 1st flr.) Learn about the Partnership for Innovation in Education programs that northern Kentucky schools use to develop original programs that strengthen children’s critical reasoning, analytical and technical skills in grades K-8. The session will cover “case-based” STEM content, an app highlighting that content, and new, scalable revenue streams to school districts in collaboration with university, business and community stakeholders. |

This session extends the budgeting and resource allocation down to the “desktop.” Participants will learn how policy and discretionary decisions impact instructional quality at the school level including classroom sizes and instructional material. The session will cover the decision-making process from student data disaggregation, identifying cognitive and non-cognitive needs and prioritizing allocation of funds. Includes school resource allocations, data driven decision making, staffing formulas, the role of the school council and comprehensive school improvement plans. |

Brunch Session, Sunday, February 2 (1.25 hour training credit)
8:30AM - 10:30AM - Fee: $22.00 | Sgt. Matt Eversmann (Ticket required and must be purchased in advance) (Ballroom, 2nd flr.) First Sergeant Matt Eversmann's legendary leadership while facing the horrors of war cemented his status as an American military hero. Portrayed by Josh Hartnett, Eversmann was immortalized in the epic film, Black Hawk Down, which recounts the 18 harrowing hours when US soldiers in Somalia were trapped in a hostile district of Mogadishu. Young Rangers and Delta Force soldiers fought side-by-side, outnumbered and marked for death by an angry mob, until a rescue convoy was mounted.
Committed to sharing the lessons he learned in the military, inspirational speaker Matt Eversmann focuses on motivating all people, be they soldiers, students, or employees, through values-based leadership, encouraging them to do their best and dedicate themselves to a cause. His courage and patriotism are unmatched, and his power as a motivational speaker is unrivaled.
Matt Eversmann has received many military decorations, including the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Ribbon, eight Army Achievement medals, and four Army Commendation medals. For his service in Somalia, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Before his retirement in early 2008, Eversmann served 18 months in Iraq leading an elite Army Ranger force.
